It's no secret that I have a life-long love of all things mystery. I think it started with a good, old fashioned Nancy Drew hardback that I brought home from my grandmother's house (the book had belonged to my mom as a child). Word to the wise - Nancy Drew of the 1940's used much bigger words than the Nancy Drew of today.
I don't remember how old I was the first time I picked up Sherlock Holmes, but I couldn't have been much more than 9 or 10. Once I started with Holmes and Watson, I didn't stop until I had gotten my hands on every one of their adventures (including a really horrible version of the written-for-radio broadcasts).
Brilliant Sherlock Holmes and his faithful friend, Dr. Watson, have never failed to give me a pleasant afternoon, especially when there's a cup of hot tea close at hand. I'll never forget my feelings when I arrived at the scene where Sherlock goes over the falls - I seem to recall crying. It's easy to become attached to a literary character, isn't it?
Indeed, my copy of the Casebook of Sherlock Holmes is quite ragged and has probably seen better days, but it legitimately earned it's spot on the top of my nightstand.

This book is one of my favorites too. I can't think of any contemporary mystery authors who come close to Doyle's calibur.
